Reading Workshop We read every day during our Reading Workshop time. Our goal is to have students reading (eyes on the text) for at least 1 hour each day. We try to spend about 30 minutes each day reading at school, and students are expected to read about 30 minutes each night at home. During independent reading time, students have time to practice the comprehension skills and strategies that have been taught and modeled during mini-lessons and read-alouds. Our curriculum follows the Common Core aligned Reading Units of Study by Lucy Calkins.
An important component of our reading program is that students read books that are a “good fit” for them. Readers can use “I PICK” to help them find “good fit books.” P--Purpose What is my purpose? (To learn, for enjoyment...) I--Interest Am I interested in this topic, series, author, genre C--Comprehend Do I understand what is happening as I read? K--Know Do I know most (or all) of the words? (Use the 5-Finger Rule) 5 Finger Rule: When I read a page of text (in a chapter book), I start with 5 fingers up and put a finger down for each word I don’t know. 5 or 4 fingers left up after reading the page means the book is just right or easy for you! We also use a Guided Reading Leveling system to help us identify the difficulty of texts. As students “book shop” in class, I steer them toward a certain level, or range of levels. You can use the Book Wizard website to help find the levels of most books. http://www.scholastic.com/bookwizard/ Students have a “book shopping day” once a week in class. They choose a stack of books that day for their weekly reading. Sometimes reading partners or book clubs will choose the same books and read them together. Students may also choose books from the school or public library. I ask that students read just one book at a time and that they carry this book back and forth from school to home each day, along with their reading logs. |
